Eczema treatment other than steroids

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I'am 17years old and for the past 2 years I have been suffering from eczema on my chin and around my mouth. It is really itchy, red and flaky. My doctor has prescribed me steroids but they seem to thin my skin. I have used various moisturizers and have stayed away from perfumed goods but there is no improvement. What can I do? Thank you Hazel Demir
Dear Hazel: Eczema is a chronic condition, but you can control it with treatment, by avoiding irritants, and by keeping the skin well-moisturized. You may use anti histamine medications to relieve itching or may also use a cold compress in the affected area. Use ointments (such as petroleum jelly), creams, or lotions 2 - 3 times a day and should be free of alcohol, scents, dyes, fragrances, or other chemicals. Keep water contact as brief as possible and short, cooler baths are better then long, hot baths. Do not scrub the skin over the area and apply lubricating creams, lotions, or ointment on the skin while it is damp. This will help trap moisture in the skin.
