Itching Swelling and Pain in the Left Elbow

Dear Ask The Doctor:My husband has itching, swelling, and pain in his left arm below his elbow. just started friday, out of nowhere. any thoughts?

Dear Augusta: Dermatitis is inflammation of the skin and this presents as itching, redness, swelling and blistering of the skin. Dermatitis can be caused by contact with an allergen, constant scratching, certain drugs and infections. Sometimes the cause may not be identifiable. Treatment for dermatitis depends on the cause and presenting symptoms.

In the meantime I would advise your husband to refrain from excessively scratching the area, apply wet compresses and avoid any allergens. He may need to see a family physician or a dermatologist who may prescribe a corticosteroid cream and an antihistamine.
