HPV vaccination |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 32yr old woman whose new partner once had HPV 10yrs ago ( he has been treated ) we want to start having unprotected sex ( after complete STI checkups ) and his doctor informed him that I should get vaccinated against HPV , I have since done some research and the side effects are quite severe ... Is this vaccination neccessary? Dear Jo: Genital HPV is a common virus that is passed on through genital contact, most often during sex. Most sexually active people will get HPV at some time in their lives, though most will never even know it. It is most common in people in their late teens and early 20s. Since there are many types of HPV and some of them can cause cervical cancer in women and other less common genital cancers like cancers of the anus, vagina, and vulva (area around the opening of the vagina). This could be beneficial at any age. I want you to understand that this vaccine is not necessary but you will feel reassured that you are protected against this virus that is considered a risk factor for cervix cancer. |
