Do STD blood and urine tests dectect HPV virus? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently had a STD check, both blood and urine samples were taken, because my girlfriend appears to have symptoms for genital warts. However, I dont have any symptoms and my test results came back negative. My girlfriends symptoms seem to be getting worse though. Is it possible that I could be carrying the HPV virus and not realise it? Also, is it possible that an STD test wouldnt detect the HPV virus if I do have it? Dear Russell: The HPV tests on the market are only used to help screen for cervical cancer. There is no general test for men or women to check one’s overall “HPV status,” nor is there an HPV test to find HPV on the genitals or in the mouth or throat. But HPV usually goes away on its own, without causing health problems. So an HPV infection that is found today will most likely not be there a year or two from now. Certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in males and females. To prevent transmission of HPV from your girlfriend, I would suggest you to use condoms while having sex; this would reduce the chances of transmission and also wait for her warts to clear. |
