Dear Ask The Doctor: Can genital warts lead to cancer? I have been looking online and keep finding mixed answer, I had genital warts about 5 years ago and they went away on there own and was wondering if I should be worried about cancer? My test came back negative for HPV but from what i read online they only test for his risk HPV and genital is low risk Also how long does it take for cancer to develop? I have not had a papsmear done in 3 years due to no insurance Dear Chrissy: Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), as you may already know. Some strains of genital HPV can cause genital warts, while others can cause cancer. There are more than 40 different strains of HPV that specifically affect the genital area, certain strains such as HPV 16, 18, 31 and 33 are more commonly related to Cervical cancer. Usually warts causing HPV virus are not related to cancer, however I would suggest you to follow up yearly with PAP smears. |
