Dear Ask The Doctor: So I had sex with a girl who did not disclose that she had HPV with me until after the fact. She said she was diagnosed with it a couple years ago and that it sometimes goes away on it's own. But apparently she developed cervical cancer from the virus. Does that mean that the HPV is still present or could it have gone away but the cancer is still there?
Dear Ju: HPV is human papilloma virus which is a sexually transmitted virus. There are many serotypes of this virus some of them lead to cervical cancer in women while some lead to warts in both men and women. While we have methods and treatments for the warts and cervical cancer ,there is no way of eradicating the HPV virus from the body and it essentially remains dormant in the body. Thus even though the girl you had intercourse with had cervical cancer the HPV virus is still very much present in the body. |
