Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello my boyfriend has got genital warts and i have been with him for 6 month now, even though iv had the hpv vaccine im wondering if i could still get them? im quite worried because my boyfriends warts wont go, im only 17 Dear Laura:
If you have been vaccinated before you had contact with him, you may have maximum protection from the infection. But if you had the vaccine recently, within these 6 months of contact with him, you might have contracted the infection because the transmission of HPV occurs when you come in contact of the infected skin lesion and use of condoms may also not provide protection against this virus. The immune system of the infected person will eventually develop protection against the virus, preventing HPV from leaving the cell and creating lesions, or transmitting the infection to partners. Most people that get an HPV infection will have it for life, but their immune system protects them from recurrences.
