Dear Ask The Doctor: I was told almost 4 years ago that I had hpv. And I've always heard that it usually goes away on its own within 2 years. And my paps were ambormal for ab out a year and now they have been normal since then. And I haven't had any problems with warts in a while. I've never had many just one here and there. I thought that my my body had cleared it since my papas have been normal for years now and I've had no problems. But I had sex a couple weeks ago and now a wart has came up. So I'm so confused and want to know when is this supposed to go away? And am I going to have to deal with these warts for the rest of my life or do you think they will go away? And how likely is it for guys to get. Because I usually don't tell anyone about this.
Dear Casey: HPV infection is passed from one person to another through sexual contact involving sex or the skin of anus, mouth, vagina or mucus membrane. It is possible for genital warts and HPV to spread, even when no warts can be seen. Warts may appear weeks to months after exposure. It usually takes 2 years but may take longer, to go away on its own. You need to follow up with regular paps for an early detection of any cervical changes. It is equally likely for the guys too to get as well as give this infection. Thus it is important to be aware of the presence of infection, although no treatment is available for cure, except body's self defence mechanism.
