Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a male, and I'm not yet sexually active, but close. I have 2 common warts on my foot, 1 on my index finger. I wanted do to ask, before participating in sexual activity, is a wart on the hand spreadable to my partner, and if so, would that be the same (or as incurable) as Genital Warts?
Dear Xavier: Warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and is extremely common in young adults. These are more than 70 different types of HPV and the ones which affect the skin of hands and feet are different from the ones affecting the genitals (these are more dangerous). Common warts can be contagious and can spread through cuts in the skin or walking barefoot in public areas. So answering your question, yes, a common wart can spread to your partner but she may be at a higher risk if her immune defences are low. Genital warts are more contagious and may not always be seen. Using condoms and stopping smoking may reduce the chances of getting genital warts. |
