HIV from high risk sexual behavior

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi I visted thailand on holiday 3 months ago. I'm not proud of it but I visited an official brothel and slept with a prostiture using protection but also performed oral on her. I also slept with another thai girl (not a prostiture) using a condom and also performed oral on her. I'm worried I may have contracted an STD although I have no symptoms at all I need some sort of peace of mind. Testing is expensive so I'm just wondering what the best course of action is?
Dear Jordan: You were engaged in a high risk sexual behavior, as per your description. The following factors are associated with an increased risk of acquiring HIV infection and STDs: Unprotected sex with an unknown HIV status person, receptive anal intercourse carries a particularly high risk, injection drug use (sharing needles or drug paraphernalia), occupational needle stick or body fluid splash (estimated transmission rate <0.3%), contaminated blood products (before 1985 in the United States). In your particular case, if you are not sure about the HIV status of your partners or if you are feeling very stress out and worried, it is strongly recommended that you get tested. Testing for HIV is a two-step process. First, an inexpensive screening test is done. If that test is positive, a second test (Western blot) is done to confirm the result. But those test are very specific only to detect HIV, the other STDs have their own tests, specifics to detect their causing agents. Testing for STDs is simple and relatively painless. There are various methods for testing, depending on the condition. Some STDs can be detected through a urine sample or swab, while others may require a blood test. |
