Unprotected sex and HIV transmission chance

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello Docter, I had unprotected sex with prostitute in unconscious manner as i was drunk,i want to know what are chances of AIDS and when i have check for HIV test

Dear Mahesh: AIDS is caused by the HIV ( human immunodeficiency virus) which is transmitted sexualy, through contaminated blood or other methods like IV drug use, tatooing etc. The chance for you to acquire HIV infection after unprotected sexual intercourse is 0.3%.I would advice you to get tested as soon as possible and again after 6 months as there is a window period between which the virus may not be detectable in the blood. Also keep a watch out for signs of fever, generalised weakness and myalgia, nausea, vomitting as this is how the symptoms initially manifest. You can be infected by the HIV virus but may not have AIDS till certain criteria like CD4 cell counts are metand/or certain infections occur.

It is important to abstain from unprotected sexual contacts and donating blood during this time period that you are being tested.
