May I get AIDS by performing oral sex?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can you get aids from getting a blow job

Dear Cordarryl: Yes, it is possible if the person who you are having sex with is infected. HIV is transmitted when the virus enters the body, usually by having sex with an infected partner, through the lining of the vagina, vulva, penis, rectum, or mouth. The following factors are associated with an increased risk of acquiring HIV infection: Unprotected casual sex with an infected or unknown HIV status person, receptive anal intercourse carries a particularly high risk, injection drug use (sharing needles or drug paraphernalia), occupational needle stick or body fluid splash. The virus does not spread through casual contacts such as preparing food, sharing towels and tooth brushes, bedding, or via swimming pools, toilet seats. The virus is also unlikely to be spread by contact with saliva, unless it is contaminated with blood. I strongly recommend you to get tested if you were engaged in a high risk sex behavior with a casual partner with an unknown HIV status.
