Vaginal Itching And Lower Abdominal Cramps

Dear Ask The Doctor: Okay so i have a question. I all started last sept as far as i can remember me and my ex had sex n witha condom and my vagina started itching and burning and the discharge had chunks in it. then in december we had sex again and my vagina started bleedig a little nit and my stomach hurt while i was in the shower, kind of like abdominal cramps. I just recently had sex with a guy on saturday night today is wednesday but my vagina has been intensley itching for 2 days now and keeps me up at night and this morning wed morning i went in to gobpee and there was a little bit of blood in it. It doesn't burn when i go pee it just itches everywhere???? I am wondering what is causing this?? Is it an std?? I have a pap coming up soon but i don't know if they wil catchi it?? and the clinics here only test for chlamidia gonnerea the other tests cos money which I don't hav e. so?? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Sheyanna: The most common cause of foul smelling vaginal discharge and irritation is due to bacterial vaginosis. Antibiotics like metronidazole and clindamycin are affective in bacterial vaginosis. Other causes could be vaginal thrush. Usually the discharge seen in vaginal thrush is whitish in color and is accompanied by intense pruritus leading to redness and inflammation in  the area. You may need an antifungal medication like fluconazole which is available both as an ointment and an oral medication. If your symptoms do not resolve with this treatment, then you may need see your doctor/gynecologist. A swab test may be done to identify the organism. treatment will depend on the cause. I would advise you not to use any other creams, tampons or deodorants in the affected area.
