Dear Ask The Doctor: I just found out I have trichomoniais but I havn't cheated on my boyfriend and either has he. Before getting with him I was in a abusive situation with another man, but that was four years ago. im bad at taking care of myself when it come to my yearly check ups. Last time I was checked was 3 years ago and the only thing that came up was a yeast infection wich i didnt take what was percribe to me. Could I have had this disease for three years with out noticing. Dear Eve: Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection that in women can cause a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching and painful urination. Men who have trichomoniasis typically have no symptoms. Certainly a history of yeast infection might have increased your chances to acquire other infections. Trichomoniasis is caused by one-celled protozoa, a type of tiny parasite, that travel between people during sexual intercourse. The incubation period between exposure and infection can range from five to 28 days. I would suggest you to comply with your treatment this time which consists of one mega-dose pill of either metronidazole (Flagyl) or tinidazole (Tindamax). While there are medicated creams or gels that can be inserted in the vagina to treat the infection, taking the medication by mouth is much more effective. |
