Dear Ask The Doctor: I was diagonosed with diabetes in December. My fasting A1C was 7.1. Doctor said it was recent. I was put on Metformin and after several positive follow up tests my latest A1C taken last week was 5.3 after having my dosage reduced from 2000mg per day to 1000. (he previous tes was 5.1). Doctor instructed to stop taking all together. On that note, since December I have been watching what I eat and also lost 25lbs. My questions are: 1. I had ED issues when diagnosed and even still have them. Is this permanent? 2. Is there something else causing the ED? I still get mentaly aroused but cant seem to get a regular erection. Cialis and Levitra work but they are so expensive.
Dear Roger: Unfortunately, quite often when Diabetes is diagnosed it has already done significant damage to organs including blood vessels. Erectile dysfunction is a very common condition in persons with Diabetes and it is usually irreversible. Progression of erectile dysfunction can be stopped by adequate control of blood glucose levels. You will have to continue on medications like Cialis and Levitra in order to achieve an adeuate sustained erection. At present there is no treatment that can cure this condition. |
