Prozac and sexual dysfunction |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I believe I have been experiencing vaginal tightness after 5 minutes of intercourse. I was taking a mild dosage of Fluoxetine 10mg (Prozac) for about 5 months and I've been off of it for 2 months. The medication was for a mild case of PMDD. I believe within these past 2 months, I've been experiencing difficulty with intercourse with my boyfriend of 5 years. In the past, I did experience vaginal tightening occasionally, but lately it has been happening every time I have intercourse. Could my problem be related to post-antidepressant medication side effects? Dear Kay: I understand your concern about Prozac and sexual intercourse. Yes, this medication has sexual dysfunction as a side effect. Specific problems reported include male and female anorgasmia, decreased libido, penile anesthesia, vaginal anesthesia, ejaculatory dysfunction, and impotence. This medication could be causing lack of lubrication in your vagina, therefore causing pain when having intercourse; I would suggest you to use artificial lubricants which might help decreasing your tight sensation until you finish your fluoxetine treatment, or your doctor might change your medication for another alternative. I wish you the best. |
