Dear Ask The Doctor: I have had a inflammed and sore testicle. I'm a Western living in China. It has been concerning me on and off for three weeks. Sexual activity seems to highten it. I've recently got a girlfriend, by we haven't really engaged in penatrative sex yet. I have taken three packets of the anti-inflammatory medicine Cafaclor tablets. One testicle in particular is red and lower than the other. At it's worst I can feel pain extending to my lower spine and digestive system. It does seem to be hightened by romantic closeness and touching. Sexual transmission is highly unlikely. What do you think is the cause and what do you suggest?
Dear Stephen: Your symptoms are certainly suggestive of orchitis. Orchitis is inflammation of the testicles secondary to an infection. The infective organism may be a virus or a bacteria. A simple test of your sperm will be able to differentiate between the two. I am inclined to think that you have a bacterial infection given the relatively long duration of your symptoms. viral orchitis usually resolves within two weeks. I strongly suggest that you see a physician to confirm the diagnosis and initiate the appropriate treatment. |
