Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello Doctor, I have a question that I would like to ask. First, I am a male 58 years old. Until a few months ago, I had a very good sexual life. As for my problem, I can maintain an erection during sexual activity but when it's time to ejactulate orgasm, it seems like the well has run dry. My diet has not changed and I do take high blood pressure medications. Lisinop Hctz Tab 20 25MG 1x, Doxazosin Tab 8MG 1x, Metoprolo ER Tab Suc 100 MG 1x. Other than that, I do not take any other medicans. My question is this, is this a part of growing old? Should I be concerned? Could it be a sign of something more serious? Would you suggest that I see my family doctor? Thank you.
Dear Rodney: There are many causes of late ejaculation or the inability to ejaculate inspite of having an erection for example: Pyschogenic: usually related to partner or relationship issues/ stress( usually the individual has ejaculation during mastubation), Diabetes mellitus - which leads to peripheral nervous and vessel damage, medications like antihypertensives( BP meds) etc. In your case it may be either of the above and you need to get it checked by a physician in person, so as to conduct a complete physical examination and also order certain tests . If it is pyschogenic then counselling and behavioral techniques are suggested. |
