Bleeding during sex: Is it okay to be ignored?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My boyfriend and I had sex yesterday. I am supposed to get my period in a few days, but it seemed as if I was getting it when we were having sex. There was a lot of blood, but it stopped after we stopped having sex. I recently switched birth control pill brands so I was not sure if that had anything to do with it.
Bleeding during or after sex should always be investigated. There are a number of causes. It could be trauma during sex, it could be an infection of any of the reproductive organs (vagina, cervix, uterus) which are usually caused by sexually transmitted organisms e.g. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Trichomonas, or a yeast infection. Other causes could be tumors (myoma aka fibroid), cervical polyps, or a more serious cause which is cervical dysplasia. In any sexually active woman with bleeding during or after sex, cervical dysplasia should be ruled out. This is the pre-cancerous state of cervical cancer and when detected and treated early, has a very good prognosis. Other causes (infections) should be ruled out as well. A common side effect of birth control pill are menstrual irregularities; switching between brands may also cause this but it rarely causes post-coital bleeding, if at all. I strongly suggest you have it checked promptly. I hope this helps and take care always. |
