Dear Ask The Doctor: Is lindane the best treatment for pubic lice Dear John: Head lice, a very common problem second only to the common cold among communicable diseases affecting schoolchildren. Head lice are tiny, wingless, parasitic insects that live and feed on blood from your scalp. Shampoos containing either pyrethrin (Rid, others) or permethrin (Nix) are usually the first option used to combat lice infestations and can be found over the counter. However when OTC medications don’t work, Lindane which is a prescription medication is available as a cream, lotion or shampoo. It is only not recommended when the patient weighs less than 110 pounds (49.9 kilograms), are pregnant, breast-feeding, have seizures or HIV infections. Side effects may include skin irritation and seizures.
