Dear Ask The Doctor: I have mulitiple stomach polyps, biopsies have been done and everythings fine. However, I would like to know if I should avoid any foods etc. I have been hospitalized multiple times over the years with severe stomach pain and bloating...could this be why? Also, should I be tested in future for any changes? I am surprised not to be told anything by Doctor who performed EGD, was told to make appt. if any questions....I would think that should be standard. I appreciate any information you can give me.
Dear Tanya: There are different varieties of gastric polyps including hyperplastic polyps, adenomatous polyps, fundic gland polyps, and inflammatory fibroid polyps. Multiple gastric polyps are often due to fundic gland polyps where the fundus of the stomach develops many polyps. These can occur without any cause or can be part of an inherited polyposis syndrome requiring regular follow-up due to the potential for the development of malignancy. In your case, if all the lesions biopsied are benign and no familial syndrome is identified most physicians recommend endoscopy every one to three years to survey polyps for malignant change, although the risk is small. No specific diet pattern has been established as a cause or as treatment of polyps. |
