Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi. Last night my boyfriend experienced a "spell" where he felt like his food was getting stuck in the lower part of his esophagus. There was a slight pain in between the upper part of his rib cage and when this took place he had a very short instance of feeling like he was going to pass out. Can you give me some helpful information on this area?
Dear ARLENE: The difficulty with swallowing experienced by your boyfriend could be due to an esophageal spasm. These spasms are abnormal contraction of the muscles of the esophagus that cause obstruction of movement of food. The cause of esophageal spasms is unknown. Very hot or very cold foods may trigger an episode in some people. You boyfriend may need to see his doctor for an esophagogastroduodenoscopy or barium swallow x-ray to diagnose his problem. treatment will depend on the cause. |
