Dear Ask The Doctor: My 11 year old son is on Ranitidine for excessive burping and was wondering if this could hurt him?
Dear Christopher: Ranitidine is a histamine-2 blocker that works by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces. Ranitidine is relatively safe drug and is used in pediatric patients for the treatment of GERD, duodenal/gastric ulcers, esophagitis and gastric acid suppression. Sometimes patients on ranitidine may develop chest infections in rare cases. Call your son's doctor if your son develops a fever, chest pain, shortness of breath or cough with green or yellow mucus. |
