Dear Ask The Doctor: I was dignosied with h-pylori about 3 weeks ago and went through two weeks on the prev pak and prlosec althrough the vomiting has stopped i still have the feeling that my stomach is being tied in knots. Do you have any suggestions as to what could still be causing this. thank you
Dear Tina: Prevpac treatment is commonly known as triple therapy including two antibiotics (Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin) and one proton pump inhibitor (Lansoprazole) for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Prilosec (Omeprazole) is an alternative proton pump inhibitor to the one previously mentioned, which works by suppressing acid production in the stomach. It is important after being diagnosed and treated with triple therapy, for Helicobacter Pylori infection, to have a follow-up check to ensure eradication, as some patients require a repeat course. This can be carried out with a simple urea breath test, usually 4 weeks after treatment. Some lifestyle measures may help control your symptoms including avoiding alcohol and smoking, because they impair the gastric mucosal protection. It is important to avoid causative drugs including: aspirin, NSAIDs, COX 2 inhibitors, bisphosphonates and steroids. In addition, weight reduction, avoiding; coffee, high-fat foods, carbonated drinks, acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits and juices may also help. I would advise attending your family doctor or gastroenterologist to ensure successful eradication. |
