Low white blood cell count

Dear Ask The Doctor: My white blood cell count is 3.1 what does this mean?
Dear Laura: White blood cells are responsible for immunity and defending the body against infectious organisms or foreign bodies. The normal range of total white blood cells is 4.4 – 11 * 109/L, however laboratories vary slightly in their reference ranges. A WBC count of 3.1 * 109/L is low, although not critically low. I would advise attending your family doctor for a repeat test and a differential white cell count, to confirm that your WBC count is consistently low and determine which cell line is reduced. If consistently low, this will require investigation and monitoring with further blood tests in the future, because you are more susceptible to infection with a chronically low WBC count. |
