Prednisone |

Dear Ask The Doctor: My husband was prescribed Prednisone for Bronchitis - he's been on it for a while because the doctor prescribed two rounds of it because symptoms were not getting better - he has crippling heartburn from it and tingling in both arms - he has been off Prednisone for 2 days and the heartburn still lingers - he was taking prilosac for the heartburn and still is but symptoms are not subsiding -- he also has asthma, high blood pressure and he takes Symbicort but we ran out and i am going to pick it up today -- i read somewhere that the symbicort will help is heartburn - is that true and how long can he expect the heartburn to last and what can he take to make it better? Dear Debbie: I understand your concern about your husband’s heartburn. In my opinion Prednisone could cause a minor gastric irritation, however Symbicort does not offer a protective factor against heartburn. Symbicort contains Budesonide which is a steroid that reduces inflammation in the body. Also Formoterol which is a bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways and improves breathing. This medication will help him with his asthmatic symptoms, but won’t cause any effect on heartburn. Omeprazole or other more potent medications that inhibit or reduce the production of gastric acid might help. I wish him a prompt recovery. |
