Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi. I have had problems with my stomach for several years in the service. I have also been diagnosised with obstructive sleep apnea. I got a rating for the gerd but not the sleep apnea. I have read several articles about how one may cause the other. Do you have any insight on this and if so could you email me a letter stating this as to help with my va claim. thanks.
Dear Scott:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD) are common chronic diseases and share several similar risk factors. The prevalence of gastroesophogeal (GERD) in OSA patients is significantly higher than the general population; however, no causal relationship has ever been demonstrated between the two. Some studies have suggested mechanisms such as transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation during sleep. CPAP treatment of OSA may significantly reduces GERD symptoms and acidic pH exposure in the esophagus, but the improvement with CPAP occurs even if obstructive sleep apnea is present or absent. |
