Worsening acid reflux post cardiac ablation

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been told by a doctor that I have Acid Reflux. A week and a half ago I had an ablation of the heart. The burning during the procedure was bad right around the throat at the end. Since then I feel as if my acid reflux has kicked into high gear. My throat feels as if it is closing, and I have had a feeling of being lightheaded. I take 20mg of Prilosec, 325mg asprin for the next month, and the doctor who performed the operation just put me on IC Sucralfate 1gm 4 times a day. He said that the Sucralfate will take care of it. what is your opinion?
Dear Greg: A burning sensation is not uncommon during a cardiac ablation. There are two potential explanations for your worsening heartburn since the ablation. The first is that the aspirin which you are taking is worsening your symptoms. Thankfully it is generally only used short term (commonly 4 - 6 weeks) and therefore this should improve. The second explanation depends on the specific type of ablation. If this ablation was for atrial fibrillation (a procedure called a pulmonary vein isolation) there have been reported cases of esophageal irritation or inflammation. If you are unsure whether this was the procedure I would check with the cardiac electrophysiologist who performed the procedure. |
