GERD Medications |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been dealing with GERD symptoms for many years now. Previously, I was controlling it by limiting certain foods, but I have been taking omeprazole for about a year now. The problem is, I believe the omeprazole is causing the severe abdominal pain and excessive gas I suffer whenever I am hungry at all. I'm not sure which is worse - the condition or the cure. Is there another medication (prescription or OTC) which does not have this side effect? Kim Dear Kimberly: I realize your concern about Omeprazole treatment and GERD. Omeprazole might produce symptoms similar to the ones you present; however I would not suggest you to discontinue this medication. On the other hand I would suggest you to consult your physician to rule out Peptic Ulcer due to the related symptoms as well and your past history of alcohol consumption which might develop erosion in the gastric and intestinal lining. i would also encourage you to Continue to avoid spicy, fatty foods, smoking and sit for two hours after dinning before going to bed. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
