Dear Ask The Doctor: I have heartburn constantly and accessive gas (farts)Heartburn started six months ago and thought any alcoholic drink was the cause but is not and now the gas is uncontrolable
Dear Paul: Symptoms of heart burn can often be caused by dietray triggers. Common triggers include citric fruits such as grapefruits, oranges and pineapples; meats high in fat and heavily seasoned, processed or fried; spicy foods. Some individuals have very specific dietary triggers so it may be helpful to keep a symptom diary to see if there is anything in your diet consistently triggering your discomfort. Lifestyle factors such as excess weight, caffeine intake, alcohol intake and stress management also play a role.
If you are unwilling or unable to identify any dietary or lifestyle triggers, there are several over the counter medications that can make your symptoms more manageable. Please speak to your pharmacist. If there is pain associated with your symptoms and over the counter medications do not provide you relief, please see your doctor. He or She may test you for H.pylori - a bacteria known to cause peptic ulcers. |
