|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello i'm suffering with constant heartburnhow do i get rid of it,i've tried gaviscon, rennies, milk, chewing gum, drinking water and baking powder, but i still have it,what can i do?i've had it for over 2 weeks now, help me please i'ts driving me mad! Dear Wendy: Acid reflux and heartburn are both common digestive conditions that most people experience from time to time. However when these symptoms occur more than twice each week or interfere with your daily life, this might be considered GERD or Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. I would suggest you to first avoid spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, smoking and sit for at least an hour before going to bed. Antacids such as Maalox, Mylanta, Gelusil, Rolaids and Tums, may provide quick relief. But antacids alone won't heal an inflamed esophagus damaged by stomach acid. If these symptoms persist, I would suggest you to consult a gastroenterologist to rule out gastritis or peptic ulcer. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
