Acute Liver Failure after binge drinking?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been drinking pretty heavily for the past 4 years (I'm 22). A couple months ago I became concerned with my health because I knew I was drinking regularly at dangerous levels. So I stopped with my regular weekend binging. This past weekend I decided I would allow myself to go out and get drunk, after 2 months of abstinence. I drank about 8 drinks in 3 hours, which really isn't much compared to what I was drinking before. Sunday morning I woke up throwing up and hungover, as i knew I would. Now it's Wednesday and I've still felt crappy for the past 3 days. I'm very tired, nauseous, no appetite and have watery diarrhea. Do you think my liver could be failing? I don't feel completely horrible, but I know this is not normal for me, even after binge drinking. Why do you think I'm experiencing these symptoms almost 4 days after drinking? Is it more likely I have some kind of virus, or liver problems? If by Friday I am still feeling this way, I'm going to go to the doctor. (I don't have health insurance, that's why I'm putting it off)
Dear Lauren: You may be having some form of alcohol withdrawal conisdering that you had a lot of consumption of alcohol almost 2 months after abstinence. Your symptoms are not typical for liver failure however it may be best to get checked up for that and measure your liver function tests too. Try to keep your self hydrated, and take some tylenol which can sometimes help with these symptoms. Having this may infact not be related to your alcohol consumption and may be a stomach flu that you may have contracted. Again in this case too, keep your self hydrated have a lot of fluids, try the BRAT diet ie Banana, rice , apples and toast and in case the symptoms persist please consult your family physician. All the best. |
