Food Still Stuck in the Throat |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Every time I swallow food it hurts just as it leaves my throat. It feels like some food is already there. I eat and drink normally but have had a little heartburn lately. I am a vegetarian, dont drink much and eat very healthilly. I have no other symptoms but the feeling is worse now than say 3 weeks ago when I 1st noticed it being a problem. Dear Marylyn: The feeling, of food being still in the throat is referred to as dysphagia. Dysphagia may be caused by weakness in the throat and esophageal muscles, some functional abnormality causing incoordination of the peristalsis during swallowing, there is also a possibility of some benign or malignant growth in the esophagus, or enlarged veins called varicose veins may have developed. You should see your GP for an initial clinical assessment and he may than refer you to a gastroenterologist for a specialized opinion and management.
