Dear Ask The Doctor: CAn acid reflux make your chest sore? What are the symptoms of acid reflux and how can it best be treated?
Dear Melissa: Recurrent acid reflux leads to esophagitis (irritation and inflammation of the lower end of the esophagus that comes in contact with acid repeatedly). This may feel as heart burn or soreness in the chest. Other symptoms include pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen, fullness in the stomach, nausea, acid burp or regurgitation, sore throat etc. Reflux can be managed with lifestyle changes like avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol smoking, taking small frequent meals, avoiding lying down after meals, and medications to reduce acid secretion such as gaviscon, peptobismol, ranitidine, esomeprazole etc. If the symptoms do not improve with these measures, it is best to consult a gastroenterologist for further investigation of the underlying cause of reflux and its treatment.
