Reflux Symptoms: Signs, Symptoms and What to Avoid

Dear Ask The Doctor: No matter what i eat, i suddenly feel bloated and nauseous after no matter if its the smallest of meals. I feel as if there is something blocking my throat and I have to burp in order to relieve pressure from my stomach, this goes on for hours after i have eaten the meal. Also, i have noticed that these symptoms particularry flare up after i eat Dairy based products like Milk and ice cream.

You may be having reflux symptoms. Reflux happens when there is too much acid in the stomach so the acid goes up from the stomach to the esophagus and may sometimes reach the throat. Would you say it is nausea or an acid taste in your mouth? Usually nausea can be confused with this. Acid secretion increases after meals and peaks 30mins to a few hours after. Dairy products have lactic acid, and yes, because it is an acid it may worsen the reflux symptoms. In this condition, over-the-counter antacids rarely help. I would suggest consult a doctor first so other serious underlying conditions may be ruled out and stronger prescription antacids may be started. Try avoiding carbonated beverages (pop), coffee and tea as these drinks also worsen reflux symptoms. I do hope this helps. Take care always.
