Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 44 yr old female..My left breast and under my left arm area started hurting about 3-4 weeks ago, so bad that I could not even lay on that side when sleeping, went to my doctor and I was perscribed an anti inflammatory medication which made it feel bettter, and was also sent for a mammogram which came back normal, everything was ok for a few days then the pain started returning and has also moved to the right breast as well and in between my breasts right on my breast bone, especially when I eat, and when I am taking a shower and the water hits the area where my breast bone is it is very tender and sometimes feels like a heart attack (which I have never had, so I am speculating), and I also have indigestion alot since this pain started as well, I do have acid reflux and have been taking meds for that for several yrs, could this pain be related to this?.. I need to make another appt to see what this could be,does anyone have any ideas..
There are a lot of causes of chest pain. Your condition could be costochondritis (costo – ribs, chondro – cartilage, -itis – inflamed). Our ribs and breast bone has cartilages; when these become inflamed, it will cause pain when touched. Another cause could be pleuritis (pleura – thin lining covering the lungs). These structures would usually cause superficial chest pain. Reflux symptoms (abdominal pain, heartburn, acid taste in mouth) are usually apparent several minutes or an hour after meals, at night, or when having coffee, pop, or tea (caffeinated beverages). It is unlikely the chest pain is due to the reflux since you have medications for this and you have not mentioned the chest pain worsening after meals, or at night. Yet, it is still better to have yourself checked again because you may need stronger anti-inflammatory and possibly further evaluation to rule out other serious conditions. I hope this helps. Take care always. |
