Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I am a 32 yr female, with a history of gerd. I take otc prilosec, and tums as needed. I have had a red throat since 2009. I've been seen by 4 doctors (general practicitioners). They seemed to dismiss the red throat, and said it was an "irritation, or virus." I was negative for strep, and negative for h pylori. My symptoms range from the occaisional burning in my chest, and throat. Nothing seems to help it more, but I can tell a greater burning sensation if I stop or miss the prilosec. I need to know if my gerd is causing the redness, if I could have an ulcer, and if I need and EGD?
Dear Emily:From your symptoms it does to seem to be due to the GERD which leads to acid reflux into the esophagus and in extremem cases into the throat thus leading to redness of the mucosa ie the tissue of this are. I would advice a EGD scopy to find out whether there is any underlying cause or a peptic ulcer. In the mean time continue with the prilosec as that is the standard of treament. Also try and incorporate some lifestyle modifications like avoiding spicy and oily foods, citrus fruits, cholates, alcohol and smoking. All the best. |
