Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I've had trouble with acid reflux For a few years. My doctor put me on 40mg of Nexium about a year ago and I've been great ever since. He would like to run an upper GI to make sure all is okay. I'm not having any trouble but he said it needs to be ran after being on the medication for a few years. Is it really necessary? I have a really high deductible insurance and this test will be completely out of my pocket. Any thoughts?
Dear Kim: Sometimes, further evaluation of reflux is needed to document and quantify the reflux. Doctors need to document normal or abnormal findings to validate the diagnosis. Maybe he is considering or trying to rule out other serious conditions that closely resembles symptoms of reflux disease (e.g. Barrett’s esophagitis, H.pylori gastritis, etc). You should discuss this matter with your doctor and ask him more about the pros and cons. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
