Dear Ask The Doctor: Just had an episode where i was eating miniature shredded wheat and a blockage or air bubble occurred. This one lasted for over an hour. Symptoms are usually a cramp or gas bubble feeling in my chest. I cannot swallow anything more until this is gone. It doesn' affect my breathing, but it it is ususally painful. It happened a week ago and after an intense cramp and burping it was gone in about 1 minute. Never had this happen before for this length of time. The only other time this ever occured was occasionally with hard boiled eggs and those symptoms would pass in about a minute or two. this always happens on an empty stomach. Is this air or a solid blockage and should I see a doctor?
Dear Michael: Your symptoms of unable to swallow and pain after swallowing do suggest of an obstructive pathology, though this hard to tell from history alone. GERD or gastric ulcer may also produce similar symptoms. I would suggest that you visit your doctor or a gastroenterologist for a physical examination and an upper GI endoscopy to determine the cause and level of obstruction. |
