Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello Doctor I am a 25 year old male who takes part in competitive soccer twice a week. I partially tore my ACL in March 2008 and was operated on, in November 2008. The surgeon decided my ACL was stable enough and only performed a menisectomy, however since this incident one has damaged has had another menisectomy in April of 2011. Finally In December 2011 I damaged the same knee again, the MRI shows that it is similar to the previous MRI (in APRIL 2011), therefore doctors have conflicting opinions whether to perform the operation or not. I'm uncertain about the operation but I have been strengthening my knee and would help if you could give me your opinion? Thanks Nasir
Dear NASIR: If the damaged ACL is producing instability of the knee joint, absolutely it has to be repaired. If you follow your doctor directions after the repair and a good physical therapy program aimed to regain range of motion and strengthen the leg muscles, it is not likely that you have any sequels. Just keep in mind that you should not strain your knees and try to keep your weight under control as well as a healthy and consistent exercise routine. |
