Rehab post ACL reconstructive surgery: what to expect.

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had been without an acl for 4 years. I had a reconstruction surgery on March 15 but I'm still not walking without a crutch. Is this normal? Because I waited to have the surgery did that make recovery more difficult?
Dear Ti: Yes, you are within the guidelines and timeframe established in the rehab post ACL reconstructive surgery, about 4-6 weeks using crutches, non bearing weight period. After these weeks you will start progressively to bear weight on the affected knee, and range of motion exercises (flexion-extension), along with quads straightening, and hamstring stretches. It will be expected some inflammation and pain when you start the exercise routine, but you will control these with anti inflammatory medication (Aleve, Motrin). |
