Three years post ACL repair Surgery |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Dear sir, July 2007 i had ACL operation on left knee. I went physio and then 3 months to gym with a proffesional pt. I stopped gym due to high cost not finishing my recovery plan. today after 3 years can i continue? will this delay affect my knee strengthening? Thank you for your attention Dear William: If after 3 years post ACL repair surgery you are totally independent in your activities of daily living, deambulation and you do not have any pain, swelling or limitation in your knee, then you do not need more PT. For reference, the rehab protocol post ACL reconstructive surgery, is about 4-6 weeks using crutches, non bearing weight period. After these 6 weeks you will start progressively to bear weight on the affected knee, and range of motion exercises (flexion-extension), along with quads straightening, and hamstring stretches. It would be expected to have some inflammation and pain when you start the exercise routine, but you can control these with anti inflammatory medication (“Aleve”, “Motrin”) if not contraindicated by your physician.
