ACL Repair with Arthritis?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Should a 37 year old man have surgery for a torn ACL if you already have degenerative changes to the joint surfaces, or arthritis?
Dear DeJon: This is a common dilemma facing many patients and surgeons. The main factors determining repair of your injured ACL are your levels of activity prior to injury and joint instability. If you presently have recurrent instability or you are unable to adequately perform work duties or engage in sporting activities then you should have your ACL repaired, despite any degenerative changes in the joint. If the ACL is not repaired there is a greater risk of subsequent injury to other structures within the joint leading to worsening of a degenerative changes. |
