Dear Ask The Doctor: I tore my left ACL back in 1990. I was wondering over the course of 20 years can excess limping and bearing weight on the right leg cause problems in the right leg? Like numerous right ankles sprains and right knee problems. Thank you
Dear James:.All those factors that you mentioned, repeated over the years, straining a weight bearing joint may produce Osteoarthritis , which in this case is not a single disease but rather the end result of a variety of disorders leading to the structural or functional failure of the joint. The osteoarthritis involves the formation of osteophytes (bone spurs) or joint space narrowing. The following signs and symptoms may be seen: Aching pain, swelling, stiffness, or difficulty moving may develop in 1 or more joints of your legs. The pain may get worse with overuse. Repetitive squatting and kneeling also may promote osteoarthritis. Some lifestyle changes may delay or limit osteoarthritis symptoms: weight loss and exercise: Regular exercise may help you to strengthen the muscles and potentially stimulate cartilage growth. Avoid high-impact sports. The following types of exercise are recommended: range of motion, strengthening, and aerobic. Antioxidant vitamins C and E may provide some protection, and also is useful take the RDA of Vitamin D and calcium. |
