Ankle weakness and numbness after twist

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had an ankle twist a month back and it was a small fall from the stairs.I had not done an XRay since the bone were intact. After that I had put on the crape bandage and the initial muscle on the ankles stopped to pain after a week. However it has been a one and a half month now and even after putting on bandage the ankle and feet still feels weak. If I stand for more than 1 hour I start to feel numbness in that feet and in general it seems to be nerves related pain and not muscular pain. Please guide me what should I do.

Dear Kitty: Depending on the severity of the ankle sprain (Grade I: mild degree of swelling and stretch has occurred to the ligaments. Weight bearing is possible. Grade II: moderate swelling and an incomplete tearing of ligaments, also mild instability may be present and also pain with weight bearing. Grade III: severe swelling and pain, complete rupture of at least 1 ligament with remarkable instability), and depending also of the received treatment accordingly, we may expect a given outcome in terms of ankle stability, meaning that if you did not received the adequate immobilization and physical therapy after the twisting, you may be experiencing some symptoms of chronic instability of the ankle, as you mentioned: weakness and numbness or tingling sensation.  I recommend that you get a thoroughly assessment by an specialist (orthopedic surgeon or sports medicine) that include physical examination and imaging studies (CT or MRI) to determine  the integrity of the ankle ligaments and decide the best treatment for your problem.
