Dear Ask The Doctor: I have just been through my 2nd orthoscopy surgery on the right lateral meniscus and my doctor cannot answer why I have so much bleeding afterwards. My first draining was 120cc, 2nd was 80cc, thispast time was 100cc and I already know that I'm going to need it drained again. Is my doctor missing something while he is opperating or do I have an unknown rejection button in my body.
Dear Tony: As any arthroscopic surgery, we expect some swelling in the knee due to a mild bleeding after the procedure. But for to be considered a complication, enough bleeding must be present to require the blood to be drawn off with a needle or surgically, as you can see, this is a possible complication: the heavy bleeding into the joint, which is called hemarthrosis, it is described to happen in approximately 1% of the patients. The possible causes for this to happen are: you are taking Coumadin or another “blood-thinner”, maybe is an effect of the anti inflammatory medication, a possible hematologic (blood) or coagulation disorder may be rule out, maybe one of the little blood vessels in the vicinity was injured. But, finally, is up to your doctor to figure this out, maybe with the help or involvement of other specialists. |
