Fall one week Post arthroscopic knee surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had arthroscopic surgery last week. For a torn meniscus and ACL. Both were repairable. I was able to straighten my knee and was beginning to walk. But i lost balance, putting too much pressure on the knee, and ended up falling. Now i am having problems straightening my knee, with a lot of pain. Was wondering if you have any idea if i could've hurt it further? Or of any exercises i could do in order to strengthen, or help out my knee?
Dear Vanessa: First of all, it is very important in the view of the limitation that you are having now, a reevaluation by your doctor to check that you do not have any other problem due to the fall. The guidelines and timeframe established in the rehab post arthroscopic knee reconstructive surgery are about 4-6 weeks using crutches, non-bearing weight period. After these weeks you will start progressively to bear weight on the affected knee, and range of motion exercises (flexion-extension), along with quads straightening, and hamstring stretches. It will be expected some inflammation and pain when you start the exercise routine, but you will control these with anti inflammatory medication (“Aleve”, “Motrin”) and ice after the exercises. |
