Mobility restrictions after DVT and PE

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello. I am a healthy very active 41 year old female that recently tore my ACL at Tae Kwon do. I have no underlying health conditions. I had orthopedic surgery with hamstring graft to repair my ACL. 3 weeks after surgery I developed a DVT and with in one day of diagnosis of DVT was diagnosed with a PE. I have been therapeutic for 2 weeks (INR of averaging 2.1) and my PE symptoms have subsided and DVT symptoms are also subsiding but completely gone. I was wondering how long I should remain on restricted activity. I am anxious to resume my physical therapy for my knee, work and other activities. Thanks!
Dear Karen: Recovery from pulmonary embolism and DVT remains a case to case basis. It will depend on the severity of the condition, how much it has affected the heart, etc. I do believe you should discuss this with your doctor. Some may take weeks, others recover after months; the unfortunate ones have restricted activities for their lifetime. Those on blood thinners will have dangers of hemorrhaging severely when they get involved in sports or strenuous activities. As to when you can resume your usual lifestyle, only your doctors can answer that. I hope this helps. |
