ACL complete tear and meniscus lesion waiting for repair surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I had my knee pop on me about a month ago. I was told to get get an MRI done, which showed complete tear of my ACL and a bucket handle tear of my minescus on my left knee..I was adviced complete rest for 5 weeks by the doctore. This hapenned while I was on vacation in India. Now I am back in Canada and awaiting a specialists appointment. There is very little pain but a little bit of swelling on the knee. I wanted to know if I can start moving around a little,,may be get some physio therapy done, while waiting for the appointment and further surgery.

Dear Anil: I recommend you do not bear weight in that leg until your doctor decides definitely the type of treatment (surgical) that will be used in your case. Meniscal injuries are a common problem in sports and in young active individuals; they are the most frequent injury to the knee joint. The menisci are C -shaped fibrocartilaginous structures attached to the tibia and their main functions to enhance the contact between the two articular surfaces of the knee: femur and tibia ones. Sometimes these injuries are associated with ACL or collateral ligaments tears. If the meniscal lesion is mild and the ligament tear is partial, conservative treatment can be used. But in more severe cases (complete torn meniscus and/or ligaments) the arthroscopic repair surgery must be considered for a definitive solution as in your case. What you can do in the meantime is try to lose weight if you are overweight this will help you later on with the rehab process ahead.
