Dear Ask The Doctor: My girlfriend has inflamtion in her acl and it swollen. They told her they can't fix it and just gave her motrion, that doesn't make sense to me,is it really impossible to lower the swelling and get ride of the inflamtion in her acl?
Dear Jacob: Depending of the severity of the lesion according to the MRI, the doctor will decide the type of treatment (conservative or surgical) that will be used in the case of your girlfriend. If the lesion is mild meaning: the ligament tear is partial, conservative treatment can be used. Spontaneous healing is common because of the rich blood supply in the meniscal periphery. Successful recovery from a mild ACL tear is helped by a gradual resolution of symptoms over 6 weeks with a return to normal activity by 3 months. But in more severe cases (complete torn ligaments) the arthroscopic repair surgery must be considered. |
